These photos are inspired by traditional children’s portraiture and fine art studio photography. They are intentionally designed to be timeless, simple rather than styled, with heavy props, focused on the child’s face and expression, and created as artwork, not just digital files.

Most heirloom portraits feature light, neutral backgrounds , gentle posing, and soft lighting that highlights a child’s features without distraction. The goal is to create a portrait that feels classic and refined instead of casual or busy.

The most ideal age for an heirloom portrait is around 3-4 years old. My top tip is to schedule this session before your child loses their first tooth! However, don’t worry if you missed this stage. When it comes to heirloom portraits, the only rule is that your child must be able to sit up unassisted.

If you missed scheduling these portraits when your child was young, you haven’t missed out. These portraits can be scheduled at any age!

These sessions will take place in my photography studio in Purcelville, Virginia.

Heirlooms are really intended as a solo portrait, as the effect will only work for one child at a time. However, I will be more than happy to also photograph siblings together in a classic portrait during your session as well!

These heirloom sessions will be up to 30 minutes (so the little ones don't get too tired!), and focus on one child at a time. The images will be ready for you to view and select from the same day, and any orders of printed portraits and products will be ready and delivered to you in time for the holidays!
